Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog)
"I really enjoyed my visit to the Welsh Highland
Heritage Railway in Porthmadog.
For the visitor, there is a large free carpark and a charming
tea room selling locally made meals and snacks. The shop is
the central point on the railway; for the railway enthusiast
it has virtually every railway book available and is the best
railway bookshop I have ever been to! There is also a range
of toys and Thomas the Tank Engine gifts for the children,
sweets, chocolate and icecream. The shop also sells a range
of model railway goods and is the place to purchase your tickets.
The railway journey itself is fairly short - but for families
with young children it is just right. Your tickets allow you
to travel all day and unlike some of the other bigger 'Great
Little Trains of Wales', the staff and volunteers take time-out
to talk to the customers and interact with them. On the return
journey from Pen-y-Mount to Porthmadog, the train stops at
the engine sheds where a new museum building has just opened.
Here visitors are able to view preserved steam and diesel
locomotives and climb on them, and find out all about the
history of narrow gauge railways. There is something for everyone
at the WHR and I would definitely visit again."
