Join us for a train ride with a difference. Climb on board one of our heritage carriages for a short trip through the Snowdonia countryside. On the return journey, the train stops at the newly expanded “Engine Sheds”, where you can climb on one of our steam or diesel locomotives and see how things work for yourself. Ideal for families with young children...... and for kids up to the age of 90!

Hands-on Experience
The WHR(P) is one of the few steam railways where you get chance to visit the engine sheds as part of your ride and climb on board the engines, work the levers and see for yourself how things work. Find out what makes our steam locomotive “Karen” a tank engine. Meet “Beano” the horse and see how narrow gauge railways worked before steam locomotives came along...... You can also sit at the controls of our small blue shunting locomotive and discover why you drive it sideways, or climb into the cab of one of the largest narrow gauge engines in the UK.
Outside the sheds, have a go at working the buttons and switches inside our diesel shunter “Badco”. On certain selected days, you can also have a ride on our new miniature railway.

The Train Ride
Ride in our vintage coaches, some of which are over 100 years old. See where the Prime Minister sat when he visited the railway in 1892. The train starts at Porthmadog (WHR) station, and trundles through the meadows of Snowdonia to Pen-y-Mount Junction. Look out for views of the mountains and the towering bulk of the old sea cliffs. At the heritage station, watch the Guard operate the points and signals to allow the locomotive to run round, and appreciate the ambience of a typical 20s-style WHR halt. You can leave the train here and explore the network of footpaths through the surrounding countryside, rejoining a later train (your ticket is valid all day).

Opening Times.
Trains run every day from 28th March – 1st November, though we’re closed on some Mondays and Fridays in October.

Trains leave Porthmadog (WHR) station at 10:30, 11:30, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00. The 16:00 train doesn’t run in October or November.

Enjoy our many special events for children and families – from Easter Bunnies (April 12th) and Teddy Bears (May 30th and 31st) to Welsh Dragons (July 19th and 20th) and our new Hallowe’en spooky goings-on (October 31st).

Experience the Spirit of the Welsh Highland at our main gala of the year - May 2nd, 3rd and 4th – where we’ll be recreating the 1920s with the return of a World War I Baldwin engine to the WHR for the first time in 73 years. There’ll be other visiting steam locos on both the main and miniature railways, classic vehicles, “Drive an Engine”, and much fun-filled activity. The Porthmadog Narrow Gauge Model Show is at the Glaslyn Leisure Centre (200yds) on the Saturday and Sunday.

In August, there’ll also be steam trains on the highly-scenic Cambrian railway next door, so you can re-create the feeling of arriving at a junction station on a steam-hauled “main line”, and changing onto a narrow gauge steam branch line.

Visit our website www.whr.co.uk for full details of special events taking place.
