An opportunity to purchase Welsh bedspreads, tweeds and travelling
rugs at the mill where they are woven together with garments, dinner
sets and purses made up in our fabrics. Most of our products are
exclusively available in our shop. We also stock a carefully selected
range of pure wool and natural fibre knitwear, accessories, and
sheepskin rugs, gloves etc.
Visit our mill and see how traditional Welsh bedspreads are woven
on Dobcross looms as they have been for over 100 years. We carry
out all the processes in the woollen manufacture here from the raw
wool to the woven bedspread. The top two floors of the mill (open
Easter - end September) contain the carding engines, spinning mules,
doubling machine, warping mill etc. These machines can be viewed
during opening hours but operate according to production demand.
Trefriw
Woollen Mills started life as a pandy about 200 years ago. Pandy
means "fulling mill" in English and cloth which had been hand woven
was brought here. The mill was situated by the fast-flowing river
Crafnant in order to use the water to wash the wool and power the
water wheels. The water wheels were dismantled about 1900, but we
still use the water to turn the turbines which generate electricity
to power the mill.
The small garden by the hand spinners cottage contains plants associated
with the textile industry:- teasels for brushing the cloth, plants
which supply natural fibres such as flax and sisal, and plants which
supply natural dyes such as woad and madder,.
Trefriw is a lovely village in the Snowdonia National Park. Also
worth visiting in the area:- Llyn Crafnant and Llyn Geirionydd,:-
lakes which supply the water which generates our power, the Fairy
Falls in Trefriw, Llanrhychwyn Church, Trefriw Spa, Gwydir Castle.
A number of walks (Trefriw
Trails) start in the car park opposite and are way marked.
