Step back in time to a more leisurely way to travel. What better
way to enjoy the spectacular sights of Snowdonia than from your
seat aboard on of our little steam trains. Starting at Gilfach Ddu
, the journey takes you past the 13th century Dolbadarn Castle,
crossing possibly Britain's shortest river and passing between Llanberis'
twin lakes as the train negotiates the new extension (opened 2003)
to Llanberis village. From here the train runs non-stop through
the Padarn Country Park, joining the old slate railway route to
run along the shores of Lake Padarn to Penllyn, and giving some
stunning views of Snowdon, the highest peak in England and Wales.
On the way back the train makes a short stop at Cei Llydan, an
ideal place for a lakeside picnic, before returning to Gilfach Ddu.
Here you can watch the driver stoking the fire, the engine taking
water, or spend some time visiting our gift shop and cafe.
All our trains have wheelchair accommodation, but spaces are limited,
so please let us know you are coming. Toilets, including disabled
access are situated nearby in the Country Park.
Why not "make a day of it" and visit some of the other
nearby attractions.
Cwm Derwen Woodland Centre at the half-way station at Cei Llydan,
has an adventure playground and nature trail. Plenty of hands-on
activities for children. Phone 01286 872014 for opening times and
admission prices.
The Padarn Country Park includes marked walks and Nature, Woodland,
and industrial trails, an old slate quarry, picnic sites etc. Visit
the Old Quarry Hospital for free displays and information. The Park
is also home to a range of craft workshops and a water sports centre.
The Welsh Slate Museum will delight you for an hour or more with
its preserved machinery and railway equipment, huge waterwheel etc.
Demonstrations of slate splitting and iron forging. Cinema, photographic
exhibitions and displays all at a modest cost.
